Elegance and Romance (A1-B2)

Course Description

The training gives the learner the opportunity to acquire language skills that enable them to function independently in an authentic language environment, gain additional access to various sources of knowledge, develop the ability to think and analyze independently through reading, and communicate in the language being studied. Gain confidence in further successful study of French and other foreign languages, be able to express thoughts in writing, and have the opportunity to independently develop acquired language skills. The initial language proficiency level is determined based on a test before the start of training.

Learning Objectives

  • to master the French language at the level necessary for private and professional communication;
  • to acquire reading skills, understand and interpret various texts;
  • the learner can communicate in French in everyday life, while traveling, etc.;
  • obtaining and transmitting information;
  • communication skills (e.g., formulating statements, demands, suggestions, warnings);
  • must be able to legibly use the French language both orally and in writing.

Assessment of Learning Outcomes, Criteria and Methods

The purpose of assessing the learning process in this curriculum is to provide the student with feedback on the success of learning and information on achieving specific learning outcomes defined in the modules; support learning motivation and positive self-esteem, correction of learning tasks. The student has the right to receive information about the assessment procedure and grades.

During the learning process, the following skills are assessed:

  • reading text, translation, pronunciation;
  • performing dialogues and poems;
  • vocabulary acquisition;
  • language skills and grammar.

Process grades for various skills are summed up. Grades can also be based on comprehensive tests. The student proves the acquisition of knowledge and skills with written or practical work, oral presentations, practical exercises. At the beginning, middle, and end of the training, the teacher checks the students’ language level and gives them feedback on their progress.

  • grade “5” (very good) 90 – 100% of points are filled in correctly
  • grade “4” (good) 70 – 89% of points are filled in correctly
  • grade “3” (satisfactory) 50 – 69% of points are filled in correctly
  • grade “2” (incomplete) 25 – 49% of points are filled in correctly
  • grade “1” (weak) 0 – 24% correctly completed points.

Upon completion of the courses, the student receives a certificate of completion. To graduate from the school, students take an internal language exam corresponding to the level of the studied language: A1 and A2, B1, B2. The student has completed the training after the full completion of this training. To obtain a certificate, the exam result must be at least 60% of correctly scored points.


STUDY PROGRAMS BY LEVELS

French A1 - Beginner Level

A course from scratch to a fairly confident traveler around France. You will be able to talk about yourself, book a hotel room, order food in a restaurant, shop, and bargain at a flea market.

The course includes:

  • Pronunciation training
  • Introduction to basic grammar and vocabulary
  • Speech practice
  • Homework assignments
  • Teacher consultations in a general chat
  • Participation in cultural events with Francophones
  • Links to useful resources

Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:

  • introduce themselves/introduce others, ask/answer questions about where they live, people they know, food preferences, how to buy a ticket, plan a trip, and navigate the city
  • read and understand signs, posters, catalogs, short ads, and texts
  • communicate on simple, everyday topics, provided that the interlocutor is disposed to repeat or rephrase their statements
  • knows all numerals
  • write a short postcard, fill out a form, a hotel registration form, etc.

French A2 - Pre-Intermediate Level

An extended basic level to a confident traveler around France. You will learn to read and understand simple literature, maintain deeper conversations in French. You will learn new grammatical structures that will make your speech more “French”.

The course includes:

  • Pronunciation practice
  • Introduction to grammar and vocabulary of level A2
  • Speech practice
  • Homework assignments
  • Teacher consultations in a general chat
  • Participation in cultural events with Francophones
  • Links to useful resources

Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:

  • understand frequently used phrases and expressions by ear
  • communicate with people, travel and move around the city, get information by phone, talk about the past and distant future, etc.
  • understand simple letters, messages, find necessary information in documents such as advertisements, prospectuses, menus, schedules, instructions
  • exchange simple information on familiar and everyday topics if the interlocutor speaks slowly and clearly
  • write a note, a friendly letter, thank in writing

French B1 - Intermediate Level

The threshold level of independent language proficiency. You will be able to communicate, react, exchange information in most situations that may arise in a French-speaking country. You will be able to write business letters and describe the main aspects of everyday life.

The course includes:

  • Introduction to grammar and vocabulary of level B1
  • Speech practice
  • Homework assignments
  • Teacher consultations in a general chat
  • Participation in cultural events with Francophones
  • Links to useful resources

Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:

  • understand the main points in standard speech
  • understand the main points in various radio and TV programs, provided that they speak relatively slowly and clearly
  • communicate in any situation encountered in the country of the studied language, and express their attitude to what they see and hear, describe events, feelings, wishes
  • deliver simple, connected speech on everyday topics, speak about events, dreams, and desires
  • understand texts written in colloquial language, retell the contents of a book or a movie
  • write a simple, connected text: a letter, a description of an event, experience, or impression
  • maintain a dialogue, while catching the essence of the conversation, and also solve everyday problems

French B2 - Upper-Intermediate Level

An advanced level of French language proficiency. You will be able to speak quickly and spontaneously, easily communicate with native speakers; you will learn to make clear, detailed messages on various topics and will be able to express your view on the main problem, show the advantages and disadvantages of different opinions.

The course includes:

  • Introduction to grammar and vocabulary of level B2
  • Speech practice
  • Homework assignments
  • Teacher consultations in a general chat
  • Participation in cultural events with Francophones
  • Links to useful resources

Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:

  • understand fluent speech of native speakers by ear
  • understand French radio and television
  • read and understand texts of any complexity, understand contemporary fiction
  • synthesize information, determine the causes and consequences of events
  • process information, understand the difference in points of view
  • take an active part in discussions, argue their opinion, develop their point of view, negotiate
  • write essays or reports, argumentatively present their point of view “for” or “against”
